Heritage
.On one of the peaks of the Rodes mountain range we find the Sant Pere de Rodes monastery, the Verdara castle or the remains of the megalithic culture. It was built in the 10th century, and until the 14th century it was the main spiritual center of the county of Empúries. It is made up of the Church, the bell tower, the cloister, the sacristies, the living quarters and the abbot's palace. It is built under the remains of the Verdara castle (13th century), which gave it protection. From the monastery there is a magnificent view of Llançà, Port de la Selva and the north of Cape Creus.
Also near the monastery are the ruins of the medieval town of Santa Cruz de Roda, with only its church standing, in pre-Romanesque style, dedicated to Saint Helena. The monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes represents Catalan Romanesque architecture from the 10th century, although it underwent several modifications later. In 1930 it was declared a national monument, being considered one of the most important cultural assets of the province of Girona. It can be visited throughout the year with guided tours.
The building is built with terraces to adapt to the terrain, which has a lot of unevenness, due to the mountain on which it is located. The monastery is located within the Cap de Creus natural park, created in the 20th century (March 12, 1998).
